Wellington is the Cuisine Capital
To profile the diverse range of food and beverage suppliers the Wellington region has to offer, Grow Wellington maintains and promotes the Wellington Food & Beverage Database. Showcasing Wellington’s top food and beverage suppliers, the database allows a glimpse into the supplier company, products and availability locally, nationally and internationally.
Visa Wellington On A Plate was established in 2009 in a joint initiative between Grow Wellington and Positively Wellington Tourism (regional tourism organisation) to showcase the region’s food and beverage sector, and to develop culinary tourism. The two organisations plan and market the event in liaison with the food sector and hospitality industry.
Grow Wellington’s role is to help facilitate industry projects and encourage collaboration to ensure the region’s wine and food has a reputation on the international stage for being world leading.
Wellington offers a wide range of products, from staple New Zealand exports such as meat through to further processed, high-end products including; fine wines, craft beers, chocolate, confectionery, olive oil, honey, and coffee to name a few.
One of the ways we have identified to grow our industry is to focus on growing our exports of premium products. These are the products that differentiate our region and give higher value return to the region.
The greater Welllington region has approximately 150 companies in the business of manufacturing food and beverage products. From an economic perspective, adding value to New Zealand primary products is the key to enhanced development within the Food and Beverage sector.
This presents a huge opportunity for the Wellington food and beverage industry.
Grow Wellington commissioned research to identify a vision for the development of the greater Wellington region as a fine food and beverage destination.
We are working to five year plan called Developing a Taste for the Wellington Region.
