AFCI Cineposium 2008

Early November saw Film Wellington play host to over 160 film commissioners, international speakers and screen industry big wigs as they descended on the capital to attend the 33rd annual Association of Film Commissioners International (AFCI) Cineposium 08.

“Not only was the Wellington Cineposium a marvellous opportunity for Film Commissioners to strategise, plan and network but the event created in conjunction with Film Wellington, captured the spirit of film friendliness, co-operation and professionalism for which the AFCI is world renowed". Robin James AFCI Board President

A varied programme of professional development courses, issue-orientated industry discussions and master classes showcased the ‘Kiwi Way’ of building a successful film industry.

"I've been coming to Cineposium for 14 years and this was absolutely one of the best ever. Well worth travelling to such a different part of the world for me." Pat Swinney Kaufman, New York State Film Commissioner and AFCI past President.

‘Many of the film commissioners knew about the Lord of the Rings but left buzzing about all of the other screen industry businesses and opportunities available in Wellington. The Cineposium 08 was hugely informative and educational.‘ Delia Shanly, Manager Film Wellington.

The calibre of speakers meant that local film professionals were able to interact with world leading experts and as a result they can now present New Zealand more effectively internationally.

A real highlight was the "Oscar Winners Secrets" panel which showcased some of New Zealand's top film industry talent - Jamie Selkirk, Alex Funke, Ngila Dickson, Dan Hennah and Grant Major. "I've never been to a session with five Oscar winners, and they were so very generous in sharing their experiences and expertise" said Ms Swinney Kaufman.

‘Events like Cineposium are so important to ensuring that Wellington continues to raise its profile and compete on the world stage.” Nigel Kirkpatrick CEO Grow Wellington.

“Film commissioners open the doors to the screen industry around the world. Having commissioners from over 20 countries means our local industry now have a foot in the door internationally.” Delia Shanly
